At Home: Kintsugi, the Japanese art of restoring broken pottery to create something beautiful

About kintsugi

In Japan, repairing cracked or chipped pottery by mending the areas of breakage with urushi and coating them with gold is known as a traditional art of kintsugi. Kintsugi gives new life to broken vessels, giving it a one-of-a-kind appearance as if it had always been designed that way.

Although the culture of repairing damaged parts with urushi has existed in Japan since a while, the art of kintsugi has evolved alongside the tea ceremony culture in Japan over 700 years ago. In recent years, assembling pieces for both restoration and art purposes has been drawing attention as a model for sustainability. More and more people are discovering it during their stay-at-home lifestyles in the wake of the pandemic.
