A great traditional beauty! Let’s go to Tsuetate Onsen, Kumamoto to see “koinobori”, a springtime tradition in Japan.


Tsuetate Onsen is located in Oguni-machi, Aso-gun, Kumamoto Prefecture.

The riverside scenery of this hot spring resort town, with its rows of ryokan (traditional Japanese inns) along the river, is very appealing.

Every year from April 1 to May 6, the famous "Koinobori (carp streamers) Festival" is held, during which numerous carp streamers hang up over the river.

“Koinobori” is a blow-up streamer in the shape of a carp.

In Japan, May 5 is celebrated as Children's Day, one of the national holidays.

Children's Day is also known as " Boys' festival ".

Koinobori (carp streamers) are displayed at homes with boys on May 5, " Boys' festival ".

This festival is held with the wish that they will grow up to be strong and robust.

The festival of Koinobori originated in Tsuetate Onsen, and has been held for more than 40 years.

The overwhelming number of carp streamers, some 3,500 in all, is a sight to behold. Visitors can enjoy the colorful carp streamers swimming in the river if they look from the bridge, or swaying in the sky if they look up from the riverside.

From 7:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m., the area is also illuminated. It is recommended to stay overnight in the hot spring resort area and enjoy it at your leisure. Why not enjoy the beautiful scenery that can only be seen during this season?
